Get to know your ABC's!
Do you know your ABC’s?
When it comes to skin and moles, it is important to remember your ABC’s – the ABC’s of skin that is. These ABC’s can help you remember what to look for in moles that could be potentially cancerous.
Here’s what you should remember:
A – Asymmetry – one half of the mole does not match the appearance of the other half
B – Border– blurred or ragged edges
C – Color – uneven in color, may have a fried egg appearance
D – Diameter – growing at a rapid rate or larger than 5mm (the width of a pencil eraser)
E – Elevation – protruding from the skin
If you have any moles that fit these descriptions, you should inform your doctor. We also recommend a yearly skin exam at your annual physical. At these visits your provider will thoroughly examine your skin for changes or concerning moles, discuss ways you can protect your skin from sun damage, and answer any questions or concerns you may have.
